Our year in science is going to going to be directed by the 6 through 8th grade standards--the Grade Level Expectations (GLEs)
These standards lay out the plan for what we will learn and what aspects of the content we will learn.
Below I have included a link to the Science GLEs for grades 6-8.
Grades 6-8 Science GLEs
Within the above GLEs, you will find very detailed information about what we will discover together throughout the year. Below I am including a more concise explanation about what we will experience this year.
I. Characteristics and Interactions of Living Organisms
This section of the year is both exciting and full of adventure! During this section,we will compare and contrast the life
organs of plants and animals; discover how plants, animals, and humans function; and dive into the levels of
organization! Included in the levels of organization is the single smallest functional unit of life is the cell. We will learn
how the cell, though it is incredibly tiny, can work together with millions of other cells to make up you! We will also
look at the different ways in which organisms create offspring and at how genetically similar the offspring and parents
are based upon the type of reproduction the organisms perform. We will also discuss the organisms that cause disease and
ways that our bodies and medicine protect us from them.
II. Changes in Ecosystems and Interactions of Organisms with their Environments
In this section, we will get to look at how different organisms interact with other organisms and the results of their
interaction.
III. Processes and Interactions of the Earth’s Systems
During this section of the year, we will study the rock cycle, and explore plate tectonics (the movements of the earth's crust). In addition, we will discuss ways that we can attempt to ascertain the approximate age of rocks, minerals, and fossils.
IV. Scientific Inquiry
Inquiry is a scientific term that means we will be asking lots of questions and performing many experiments this year.
One great quality about this section is that it is not set for one specific time of the year, so we will be inquiring all year long!
V. Impact of Science, Technology and Human Activity
For this topic we will be discussing technology in terms of how it was either brought about by science or how it has
impacted science, and how it has impacted our activity as human beings. This section, like inquiry, is not limited to
one specific time of the year. Therefore we will discuss this topic quite often!
As you can see, the standards have laid out an exciting adventure for us to embark on together! I cannot wait to experience the wonderful world of science with you!!!
